Music Theory
Music Theory (6 weeks) provides technical skills, musical knowledge and performing experience that prepares students for a wide range of professional and creative opportunities as performing musicians. This course is designed for students who wish to develop contemporary music performance skills.
COURSE OVERVIEW
Music Theory curriculum at School of Contemporary Music College is designed to enable students to gain theoretical knowledge that they can apply in practical situations such as rehearsals and performances. In addition, the music theory gives students the necessary language for copying, transcribing, composing and arranging music. You will focus on mastery of theoretical knowledge common in contemporary and popular gospel styles, unwavering tempo, accurate sight-reading, and perfect “pocket,” enabling you to excel as a pro in a variety of musical contexts. There are many instances in the life of a working musician when theoretical knowledge is required, for example copying music for additional performers, transposing music to fit the ranges of different instruments or singers, clarifying written arrangements through the use of dynamics and expression markings.
Through our extensive technique courses and personalized private lessons, our talented instructors will help you achieve a highly nuanced sense of time and feel. On completion of this course, you will have acquired a musical vocabulary and understanding of some of the fundamental skills to enable you to use music theory in the working environment.
Music theory is designed for all musicians and can encompass all styles of music. Students will be using computer software packages to notate music e.g. Sibelius and this is encouraged where appropriate. However, students must develop the underpinning knowledge in order to apply theoretical principles to practical situations. You will perform frequently alongside your fellow students as well as our world-renowned faculty members, who have deep experience the music industry and in academia. They will serve you as supportive mentors, guiding you in all aspects. SCM is the smartest first step on your journey towards becoming a pro.
There will be a maximum of 9 participants per class.
